Participants will be taken through the process of marking out, roughing out and finishing a relief stone carving using hand tools. This workshop is suitable for beginners who wish to develop skills in stone carving. You will work on a design in Bath stone. We will also look at where to purchase different stones and tools, chisel sharpening and some of the health and safety issues to do with stone carving.

A two-day workshop teaching participants how to mark out, rough out and finish a Green Man design in Bath stone. The course will give people the opportunity to either carve their own design or copy carve one using a template. The course will also cover carving techniques, sharpening and look at where to buy tools and stone. By the end of the two days participants will be able to take away a finished carving.

From earliest evidence to more recent craft revival, we look at how soap has developed including exploring the perfumes used in soapmaking. Participants will then go on to make hot processed soft soap, pure olive Castile soap and Tudor inspired herb wash-balls to take away. The day is a mixture of hands-on activities and talks. By the end of the day participants will have a thorough working knowledge of soap making and its history.

Students will prepare moulds and begin working the furnace to melt copper and tin. They will then cast their own replica early Bronze Age axe head, and can then begin cleaning and decorating their axe.

The course begins will a short introductory talk and handling session of replica tools and materials used in the Bronze Age. Students will prepare crucibles, crush copper ore and charcoal before working the bellows to produce a lump of pure copper. On the second day students will prepare moulds and begin working the furnace to melt copper and tin. They will then cast their own replica early Bronze Age axe head, and they can then begin cleaning and decorating their axe.

On the workshop you will learn how to prepare your own mould, work the leather bellows on the charcoal fuelled furnace. You will then cast the liquid metal into your mould to produce a replica Bronze Age dagger blade to take home at the end of the day. You will then be given Bronze Age filing and cleaning tools to begin working on your blade. Advice will also be given on how to fit a wooden handle to your dagger blade at home.

Workshop students will prepare their own mould, before working the leather bellows on the charcoal fuelled furnace to melt copper and tin. They will then cast the liquid metal into their prepared moulds to produce a replica bronze age sword to take home at the end of the day. Students can then begin filing off the casting flash and start cleaning the surfaces of the sword.
