Friday 17 July 2026

Learn about the issues faced by the 17th – 19th Century naval surgeons travelling on long voyages around the globe. Naval surgeons were encouraged to study botany in order to record new plant discoveries and re-stock their supplies if necessary, and cope with potential shipwrecks. Discover how space constraints, efficacy and price would have affected the various medicinal herbs that would have been at hand for a variety of ailments, all having to be approved by the Royal Society of Physicians.

You will learn recipes for sea sickness, first aid, and other common problems at the time using chamomile, wormwood, capsicum, and more!
