Clothing in Seventeen-Century Provincial England
This talk will draw on Danae’s forthcoming book, Clothing in Seventeenth-Century Provincial England (Bloomsbury, September 2019), which focuses on the clothing of men, women and children living in Sussex. It will explore the ways in which cloth and clothing were being produced, distributed and acquired and how much choice men and women had in what they wore. Drawing on case studies of individual men and women the talk will also examine the methods wealthy provincial consumers used to access the London clothing market. At the other end of the social scale we will discuss the clothing strategies of the poor and the role of the parish in making sure its most vulnerable residents were adequately clothed.
