Songs in the time of Shakespeare
This is a singing workshop where the participants will have the opportunity to develop and share a number of songs used or mentioned within the plays of Shakespeare. The dramatic context of the pieces will be considered in order to inform an authentic performance of the songs. Many of these songs came from the streets, and would have been well-known by everyday people in the late 16th and early 17th century. The social context of the plays and the songs will also be considered as a useful background perspective. Replica instruments from the period will also be demonstrated to give a greater understanding of the range of acoustic sounds heard in the theatre at the time.
