A two-day course covering practical and theoretical aspects of flint walling. It includes

  • Preparation of flints for laying, knapping and setting out.
  • Advice on tools and lime mortars,
  • Practical flint work in different styles including galletting

The first day runs from 9am until 4.30pm. The second day runs from 9am until 1pm.

An introduction to the use of lime plasters and lime mortars for homeowners and professionals working with historic buildings. The focus will be on the use of lime as interior and exterior damp management system, the repair of damaged brickwork and decorative finishes. We will view samples of lime within the grounds of the Museum, followed by a practical demonstration. Participants can enjoy the hands on experience of lime plaster.

A two day course focusing on the main repair methods and ethics behind brickwork conservation. Time will be spent in the lecture room to give an understanding of how to go about the process of surveying, specifying and carrying out a repair. Topics covered will include common faults, lime mortars, materials (and where to source them) and tools.

Practical sessions will give you the opportunity to mix a variety of different lime mortars, then use these to repoint some brickwork on our purpose built sample walls.
