This is an intensive 2 day course suitable for beginners or those wanting to improve their skills. Students will learn how to take a project right through from initial preparation to a good final finish.

Amongst the skills that you will be perfecting will be surface preparation, staining, grain filling, French polishing, and finishing on top of French polish. Course notes will be provided.
French polishing is a big part of the course but you do need to know the other areas of wood finishing to become a good French polisher.

Day 1
Surface preparation – New wood & old
Surface removal
Shellac (French Polish) – It`s origins, history of usage & preparation
Staining & colouring – Using 6 types of stain & learning their advantages & disadvantages
Sealing
Grain filling – Reasons for & against, types of grain filler & application

Day 2
Removal of excess grain filler – abrasives
Making a polishing rubber
Charging a rubber
Bodying Up
Defect faulting
Pulling Over
Making a hard polishing wax
Making coloured wax sticks
Finishing on top of French Polish

Starting with a log section of a tree and some component parts, craft for yourself the necessary woodwork while learning historic methods of chair making. Using drawknife and drawhorse each student will create their own set of legs and joint these to form the solid wood frame on which to weave the sea grass seating.

Day one will see all the parts completed and a coat of finish applied, day two will mark out and joint the frame ready for the process of weaving. The rest of the day will be used to complete the simple but rewarding technique of chair seating.

This one day course is for people who like the idea of working with wood but have no or little experience and are unsure of the names and usage of both handtools. Attendees will learn how to identify and use a selection of tools including bench plane, block plane, shoulder plane, rebate plane, moulding planes, chisels, gouges, different saws, hammers. It will also cover marking out using squares, mitre squares, marking gauges, cutting  gauges and mortise gauges. Guidance will also be given as to the best types and makes of tools to buy and pointers as to where to purchase them.
