look at our ancestor’s way of using natural materials to hunt. Look at examples and have a go at replicating a simple prehistoric arrow. Participants will learn basic flint knapping to make an arrow head and the technique to bind the tool onto a prepared shaft with twine. To complete the arrow, simple fletching’s or 'flights' will be made to aid the shaft in flight.

Participants will take their arrow home.

During this workshop you will find out how a medieval scribe produced the beautiful illuminated letters used in manuscripts of the medieval period. You will be creating your own name in illuminated text on a piece of parchment using traditional methods and materials.

As a trainee scribe you will start by making your own quill pen and then mixing pigments in shells to create the bright colours. After practising writing your name using the script letters you will prepare the parchment ready to draw your initial letter design, then apply the paint and gold leaf to give it the finished illuminated effect.

All materials will be provided.

look at mini beasts close up. Armed with magnifying classes and small pots we will look for life in the undergrowth, in the pond water, learn to make better areas for butterflies and bees (look at a wild flower meadow) and construct a simple ‘bee house’.

Participants will have a book with a mini viewer to identify beasts, with plant seeds to entice their own butterflies to take away.
